The Association of Licensed Telecoms Operators of Nigeria (ALTON) has announced the commencement of harmonised short codes (New ussd code) across all networks pursuant to a regulatory modernisation initiative by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).
In a statement made available to Nigerians, the Association explained that the harmonisation of shortcodes is aimed at implementing a streamlined process for common shortcodes across the industry, by making life easier for Nigerians through the memorisation of single codes, for various services across all networks as well as providing a cohesive regulatory framework that is consistent with global best practices.
Following the directive from Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), the Association hereby inform the general public that: “The Network Operators have begun implementing the shortcodes, working closely with the NCC. The Commission has provided adequate time for subscribers to get used to this new development. We are confident this will enhance customer experience across networks,”
During migration (which is to be concluded by 17th May, 2023) old and new common codes will run concurrently, after which the old codes will cease to operate.
NCC Harmonized Codes – New Ussd Code
The newly approved Harmonized codes by NCC are as follows;
Services | NCC Harmonized Approved Codes |
Call Center/Help Desk | 300 |
Voice Mail Deposit | |
Voice Mail Retrieval | 302 |
Borrow Services | 303 |
STOP Services | 304 |
Check Balance | 310 |
Credit Recharge | 311 |
Data Plan | 312 |
Share Services | 321 |
Data Plan Balance | 323 |
Verification of SIM Registration/ NIN – SIM Linkage | 996 |
Porting Services (MNP) | 2432 |
The code works on MTN, Airtel, 9mobile, Glo, etc by just adding * & # to the beginning and end of the code.
Before the implementation of the Harmonized Codes, telecom operators uses different code for services they offer in common. After the implementation, the new system code for checking airtime balance will be same for all the networks, likewise for data balance and other services.
However, the old codes being used by the telcos would run concurrently with the new codes for some months after which the old codes would be phased out. With the harmonized shortcodes, you can be free from the hassle of memorising telcos services codes.
